Brilliant Blue Cheese

  • 10 March 2017

We often have customers telling us that they like cheese, but not blue cheese. When this happens we try and encourage a little bit of testing to see if we can find a blue cheese that they like as there is such variety among blue cheese. There are mild creamy blues, peppery blues, salty blues, buttery blues, sweet blues and more, all the way through to crazy strong, tongue curling blues like Cabrales, the legendary Spanish blue.

Blue cheese can definitely be an acquired taste and often the mere fact that the blue is mould puts people off. However, with a little perseverance and a gradual increase in the strength of the blue tasted we believe at worst a tolerance of blue cheese can be achieved. If you find yourself enjoying a little port and Stilton at Christmas then it will have been worth the effort.

Here are some blues we think are worth trying to see if you can overrule your tastebuds:

Fourme d'Ambert - Known as the 'connoisseurs blue cheese' and one of France's oldest cheeses, Fourme d'Ambert is a beautifully creamy and well balanced blue cheese. The amount of blue is just right and the flavours are distinct but not overpowering. You can buy Fourme d'Ambert here.

Perl Las - From West Wales, this delicious organic blue cheese is well worth a look. With a mild scattering of blue within the cheese the blue flavours are again subtle but Perl Las has an added sweetness that lowers the impact of the blue and really makes this cheese stand out. You'll find it hard to stop nibbling on this cheese once you've started. You'll find Perl Las in our online shop.

Burt's Blue - Made by Claire Burt in Knutsford, Cheshire, Burts Blue is another softish, creamy blue that has balanced flavours that wouldn't scare a blue cheese novice. It has a distinctive shape and softness that differ to most blues and the blue is distributed sparingly through the cheese. In the run up to Christmas we soak Burts Blue in port to add another dimension and provide a festive treat. We stock the Burts Blue Baby in our online cheese store.
